Mex - my thoughts exactly. Thicker wire = more solar watts saved. When I'm trying to calculate the difference between #8 and #6 at 8.5A, it looks like ,less than 1 AH is lost on the best sunny day (or 12W if you prefer). No big deal, but... a dumb one has to follow the crowd. I don't see anybody running #8 cable from 480W panel all the way to controller.
Heat generated at this current doesn't worry me as long as the cables are not pressed together.
