Can't find way to turn off converter in Kodiak

I would like to install an inverter, to run quiet in campgrounds where generators are restricted. I would like to connect to shore power, for simplicity but cannot figure out how to turn off the converter. Does anyone have some wisdom to share? I would be grateful.

Yes, this is exactly what I want to do, mainly to drive the coffee pot in the morning before generator hours and the TV and audio at night.

I dug a little deeper in the manuals and found our converter model, WFCO 8955. So it looks like can add a switch on the DC output side to break the loop when I have the inverter running, like a manual transfer switch.
  • Hi Tim,

You can add a switch. My converter happens to plug in right at the breaker box. Some converters are on their own breaker, so it can be used instead of a switch.

I believe Tim wants to run an inverter so he can have 120 volt power, where there is no shore power with restricted hours for generator use.

I went one step further and added an auxiliary shore power cord for just the converter. That allows me to do double conversion when there is limited amperage and/or low voltage.
  • You should not try to plug the shore power cord into the inverter.
The inverter should be connected to the batteries, then have dedicated circuits to operate off the inverter.
Not sure what you want to run off the inverter. I have two small inverters in my rig. One operates the rear TV and the other operates the sat dish, sat receiver and front TV. I have a plug strip on the front one to power up printer if needed.
Small inverters are easier to install. Some can use existing DC wiring as in my rear TVs. Front one I ran a new #6 circuit to operate it.
We do not use inverter to operate microwave, that is why we like oven in the rig. Coffee is made on old style percolator on stove top.
  • I think there is something you don't understand. That or you have the words wrong. There is no reason at all to turn off a good converter - ever.
