Carrier air V water leak

I did a search and nothing came up.

I seem to have a water leak on the back side of the unit which has water leaking in through the control knobs. We're camping right now so I doubt ill do much "heavy" repair while here but will take a look next week. Just wondering if anyone ran into this issue. I think I read that Carrier quit the rv biz, I hope I can still find a new foam gasket. Any suggestions on that's appreciated as well. Ill prob drop the control panel and replace the gasket just to be safe.

Thanks,
Joe

  • Every one of the 4 bolts could of been taken out by hand. They're all tightened up and ready to go now. Hopefully they'll stay that way.
  • My filters are cleaned regularly. That wasn't it. I dropped the panel and this is where the problem lies.

  • I have this problem specifically with my Carrier Rooftop units. They work great and are as good as can be until they start leaking water though the controls in the ceiling unit....

    CLEAN the FILTERS...

When the filters get clogged up (they may not look bad) the pressure drop across the filters keeps the condensate from draining out the hose that are there for the purpose and the water splashes up and into the air discharge hole.

It was a bear to find because it won't happen with either cover (inside or out) off.

  • Thanks for the info.

This started right after last years dual Chinese tire failure in the boonies of central Pa that had us driving on the flat, which rolled off the rim a half mile into the mile and a half dive we had left on a narrow road with no shoulder to pull off, that shook the heck out of the camper. I figured it might needed tightened down. Also, I didn't cover the camper over winter last year and really need to take the cover off the unit and clean all those drain holes out.

    Thanks again, folks

This, is a common issue with Air Conditioners.

Three common causes and usually the same repair fixes them both but one for the wrong reason.. That repair is described already and I'll not improve on his description (nor can I)

Why does it sometimes work for the wrong reason? Well I had that problem several times and finally figured it out.

1: Sometimes it is a simply matter of levelilng, The Carrier Air V "Drips" water off the rear of the water tray onto the roof. If the RV is nose down. Well the FRONT of the tray may be lower than the drip lip and it drips inside.

2: (Which is the one that drove me nuts) The intake filters inside the RV get dirty, as they get dirty air flow through them is reduced, the blower sucks mightly to pull air in for cooling and as the vacuum builds it starts sucking water out of the drip tray.. now you will hear a "Gurgling sound" with the blower running and if you do have towels and buckets ready when you turn it off because NIAGARA FALLS.

Why does tightening the bolts fix this: Well... When you remove the cover to access the bolts for tightening.. YOU CLEAN THE FILTERS.

Oh, WARNING:... I had two Carrier air V's.. Still have one.

Next time you are "up on the roof" Remove the cover.. Look at the plumbing near the compressor.. You will see where two pipes come out of the compressor and drop down into what looks like a plumbing trap (Actually it is a vibration trap and as such it is a very good idea)

Well at the bottom of the drop. on both mine. these pipes were touching, and vibrated themselves into a relighous state.. Yup, they got Holy (or is that holey) and let all the coolant out.. And that is why I now only have one of them left.

The solution is to spread 'em about 1/2 inch.
  • tighten the four bolts just a 1/2 turn or so. They are likely loose. ALSO go outside and raise the front of the camper a bit. If you are TOO level, the A/C can leak inside. Most A/C units drain from the back, so set your camper a 1/2 bubble off (front to back-with the front being 1/4 to 1/2 bubble higher) your leaking will likely stop.
  • Just tighten the mounting bolts a little . . . Probably loose as that cured the same problem i had once
