Another advantage of using the Garmin is when you go back to Canada on a trip it is easy to change back (or, on some models, it will automatically give you MPH rather than Km when you cross the border).
As to keeping track of the miles driven, it shouldn't be impossible to explain the odometer is in Km to the DMV. They even managed to convert kilograms to pounds when I registered my trailer (NY charges by weight).
