The wire can handle the 60 amps ok. It is the loss of voltage--wires too long, high R. Even with fat wire, that is too far, so changing the wire won't help. Voltage seen at the battery is lower, so not as much over the battery's voltage, so less current to recharge with.
It is ok there as a converter, or to charge the battery on shore power where time doesn't matter. Fast charging is all about generator time reduction.
