Charging Amps engine alternator vs Generator
After spending 3 days dry camping in my Class C at Yosemite, I fired up my generator to defrost some bagels in the microwave. I have a Xantrex Battery Monitor and noticed I was down about 65 amps for the 3 days. Charging AMPS from the generator with nothing on were 9 AMPS. When we started for home with only the engine running the AMPS were 13.
Later we stopped for lunch. With the engine only running, the alternator was charging at 9 amps to the house battery bank. I shut off the engine and started the Onan 4K generator. The AMPS going to the battery bank were now 5 amps. After a minute, I turned on the AC. After lunch I shut down the AC, waited a minute and saw the amps from the generator were still 5 amps. I shut down the generator. I started the engine and went back and observed that the amps from the alternator were 9 as before.
So it appears that the engine alternator does a better job of charging the house battery bank. The batteries are 2 year old Interstate Group 24 with approximately 85 amps each and the Converter/Charger had been upgrade from the 7345 series Parallax to the Inteli-power 45amp charge wizard. Yes, I did check to make sure the Charge Wizard was on the highest /maximum stage of the 3 stages.
