Been in the business of servicing or repairing home refrigerators since retiring from the USAF in 97. No is your answer. Manufacturers do not intentionally design their products to last just a few years. That would be bad for their company and industry. Household refrigerators should last, with regular upkeep, 15 to 20 years. That still doesn't mean they are designed to break at the 20 year mark.
I still see many 10 to 15 year old refrigerators that are working fine and being sold at a local used appliance shop I am associated with. The majority of these are were replaced because the homeowner was upgrading, remodeling or moving.
From my experiences I stay away from most non U.S. brands and those that have come out with newly designed electronics for a few years.
Just keep in mind that household refrigerators were not designed to withstand the bouncing of a TT and it's life expectancy can be shorter.
