Cheap television speaker upgrade?

The space in our camper is limited and there is only one place for my TV (television). It hovers over top of the refrigerator and somewhat below the a/c. Unfortunately, the A/C drowns out the TV as it is extremely close to it. The TV only gets so loud without sounding bad. Moving it is not an option.

I would like to buy an external speaker that plugs into the headphone jack output. (Maybe even the coaxial output. Don't remember seeing that but I will look again)

The speaker can sit under the TV or with an extended speaker wire, I can possibly place that speaker in the overhead bin.

Funds are limited so I would like something cheap (<$40), but if it doesn't work I won't like that either. Trying to find the happy median but I want to hear it so...

Any ideas?

  • Sound bar in the immediate area would probably work best. There are also Bluetooth ideas. But buying the BT output adapter and BT speaker box would be above the budget.
  • We use a Bose speakers that we dock the ipad. use the head phone jack from your TV and plug it into the speaker aux port. Great sound.
  • I bought a pair of speakers on ebay. Then I glued together pieces of Medium-density fibreboard (MDF), to make a custom fit sound bar. I had to solder jacks into the TV as I had no volumn controlled outputs. I have less than $20 in the system and it sounds good. The original were that squeaky I couldn't stand it.

A good set of computer speakers from Logitech will do the trick. Free shipping on Newegg.com. The one's with subwoofers tend to sound better/have more volume (except the really cheap one's) but will cost more than $40 though. I find that much less is garbage. Use the headphone jack on your TV. You can get a longer 3.5mm stereo cables from Monoprice.com - 3.5mm audio cables (get their Premium cables if length is 6 ft or more).

That's what i used when we had our HTT.

  • It looks like a sound bar above the overhead bin would be perfect for your needs. You can even get one that has a wireless subwoofer with it to really improve the sound
  • Take it from a sucker - me:

There are a lot of impressive looking amplified speakers out there that are just garbage. I have six sets sitting around and they are worth little more than scrap.

I cannot offer a selection only a tip: Read the reviews before you buy. And be sure to remember that one of the pitfalls is a speaker system that needs the TV audio cranked way up - the sound gets distorted. I hope you have better luck than I did. The money factor is the killer methinks.
