I had opened mine up, flattened the aluminum heatsinks with a file and spooged on the thermal grease. I'd also put a 60x15MM wart on the outside of the case.
It still buzzed over 36 amps, and after saying 'Eff' it, I set it to 14.7v unloaded, and plugged it into a depleted battery.
Smoke and sparks at 17 minutes of buzzing.
My cheapowatt had ~90% thermal grease coverage between aluminum plate and casing, also on the thermal pad.
It blew after given some spit and polish with better heatsinking and increased airflow.
