They chatter/hum when crud is hung up inside them, or when o-ring gets dislodged on plunger
When crud gets inside they are junk...course they are junk to begin with.
When o-ring gets dislodged you can reset but you have to remove to do so.

You could disassemble and try to clean out crud.
You could replace with another one that is just another piece of junk also
You could replace with a $$ Brass one (all brass internals.....not plastic like ones sold for RV)

OR
You can remove/do away with and install a shut-off valve.

Check valves are used caused they are cheap, fast to install and cut down on number of valves/connections.
Only used to stop backflow when bypassing WH during 'winterizing'
