Didn't want to start on that one :)... Those old VW campers do have flooded battery right under the seat. Just shows that not everything in German engineering is perfect. I wouldn't want to have it there. Dead - no, healthy - not sure. You're charging it - it's boiling.
Home Depot sells certain household cleaners - not industrial or commercial, but "household", for kitchen and drain - that release very toxic acidic fumes. And guess what - they are legal.
