Cleaning an awning

What is the recommended way to clean an
awning? Mine has gotten a bit of mildew, especially on the underside, and soap and water don't quite do the trick. Would bleach damage the fabric?
  • I make up a solution of 1/4 cup dish detergent, 1/4 of bleach, and 5 gallons of water.

I brush that on to the top surface of the awning, roll up the awning and drive around the block. (It's about a 10-mile round trip.)

Unroll the awning, rinse top and bottom sides with a hose, and let dry.

  • Spray on Clorox Cleanup then use a long handled soft bristled brush. Yes, you will get some of it on you so wear old clothes. Rinse well and let it air dry.
  • We use Simple Green and water. I get under there with a brush with a long handle and scrub till the mildew is gone. Then spray it off with the hose. Please note: You will get wet using this method.
