cold and charging voltage

Hi,

I have a 9100 PD9140A with wizard. I'll be experiencing temperatures of -34 C (-30 F) this week. Should I trigger bulk mode charging?

Right now the pd is doing 13.2 volts. I am on shore power and heating electrically.

  • The batteries are full it seems, so would it even stay in bulk after you trigger it? It is timed for 4 hours, but Fisherguy's did about three when that was all that was needed to get to 90%. How long would it stay at 14.4 when they are already full? (You could find out! :) )

In any case the need for the high voltage when charging in the cold only applies to actually charging batts AFAIK. Not to just running RV loads with the batts full?
  • Hi 64thunderbolt,

I use my inverter for "extra" loads over and above the shore power cords. One of those is a 750 watt hot plate (used for all my cooking), another is the toaster, and on Monday I'll probably use a 300 watt slow cooker for 6 hours.

  • Trust the force, Luke...:B

Don, your solar at 15.5 should give you a good run up to better SOC, I would think. There wouldn't be anything wrong with using the pendant and pushing it into bulk, especially with your large use and low temps outside.
  • Hi Steve,

My solar charge controller is temperature compensated--but there isn't a great deal of sun.

When I returned to the RV on Wednesday the solar system was in float mode. Today it was not in float mode. I did see 15.5 volts.

    Don,
Might not be a bad idea assuming your batteries are not inside. I am surprised that you don't have a temperature compensated charger. Keep warm.
