Comparing *Small* Inverter Generators

I'm tired of always lugging around my (heavy to put in the storage or the new trailer and a bit loud) existing generator, when most of the time I have 3 or 4 times the power I need.

I'm looking at a <1k inverter generator, light, quiet and going to start with minimal hassle (i.e. the DW can use it) are prime considerations.

So the ones that seem the most interesting are these, interested in comments from people who may own one or have talked to someone who owns one. They are roughly in order of where I place them with what I know with an hour or 2 of browsing, other suggestions also will be looked at.

Yamaha EF1000iS

Earthquakeâ„¢ 800 watt inverterhttp://www.getearthquake.com/inverter-generator-800-watt
This one seem to have a very wide price range depending who is selling??

Honda EU1000i

Generac 5791 iX800 800 Watt
Cannot find a noise spec, at this price I am nervous about quality.

  • We have a 1000 honda inverter generator. It does what we want but it is not enough power for most needs.

    chevman
  • A 2000 peak watt, 1700w running Champion 2000 inverter model
    Would do it
The Honda is teensy bit quieter , but the champ is 1/2 the price..get a 2000 champ for less than a 1000w Honda,
And in my opinion nobody beats their parts and service dept
And they have proven to be very reliable
Quite a few members have one
  • If you didn't happen to see it I made a post about the Earthquake generator a week or so ago here http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/28556020/gotomsg/28556383.cfm#28556383. The price at Amazon is up $25 since I got mine. The Porta Source version, which looks to be the same thing, cost a lot more than the Earthquake when I got mine, now it costs less. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I suggest reading the first 6 or so "most helpful" Amazon reviews for more info. The report about the high frequency noise on part of the sine wave is correct, hasn't yet bothered anything I've used it with. I was able to use it boondocking on one trip where taking the eu2000i wasn't possible, and have used it enough in remote areas of the property that I feel I've already got what I paid out of it. I should also re-emphasize the part about being able to control the power converter draw. If you're battery wants more than about 30 amps and you can't control it, the generator is just a brick with a handle.
  • What converter? Anything over 40 to 45 amps may overload these generators.
Otherwise you could use a portable battery charger.
For running a tv or charging small items maybe a small 150 to 300 watt inverter to run from the battery.

My choice would be the proven Yamaha or Honda.
  • You will need more than 1000 watts to run a microwave or small A/C. Lately we have added a toaster oven, which would also need more watts. As noted going to the 2000 watt size is not that big a deal in size or money. Or, to defer to DW, the operating difficulty.
  • If you do go larger, Generac has a new gen called the IQ2000.
Suppose to beat Honda and more quite.
  • You can't go wrong with either the Yamaha or Honda. People prefer whichever they own, but there's really not much difference except the color. But consider the 2000i's, don't weigh or cost much more.
