So due to the tips provided above (by Mexicowanderer and others), I have done a little more googling and have discovered that this process for a new battery is called a freshening charge -- three to six amps per 100 amp/hrs, for about three hours. I am not sure of the physics behind this process, but a few manufacturers recommend it.
It is hard to find an automatic charger that will fit the bill -- most put out 10 amps or 2, but nothing in-between. That's where Mexicowanderer's trick with the light bulb comes in handy -- an amperage reducing device.
I am not sure what I am going to do, but at least I know what I ought to do.
