Converter not charging gen battery in trailer

Worked on a young mans horse trailer gen. He had a dead battery and some draws on the front batteries. The trailer had 2 bats in the front charging good from converter but the battery in the back at the gen wasn't hooked to the converter the only charge for it was a small solar panel or if he was plugged to the truck. Why would it not be plugged into the converter system. This was a 4ky spec j with no voltage regulator for charging from the gen. This is a really high dollar trailer with auto transfer switch , 2 equalizer jacks , got the whole works.

It might be beneficial to have the generator start battery isolated.
I recommend a Trik-L-Start combiner that will charge the battery when ever charging voltage is present.
Does not allow discharge through the same connection.

  • Well I tank y'all for your answers. I guess the stripped down lowest price 4 ky onan does not have a voltage regulator . That being said the cheapest and easiest way would be too add a 120 v outlet in the back and some kind of a small charger that charges just when the gen is running . I don't now how long it would take for the fuel pump on gen to run the battery down but I believe that's all the gen is using thanks.
I just looked at the trik l start looks pretty good I will tell those guys and see how I could run some wiring back there.
  • Why? Because it saves on having to run heavy gauge wire from one end of the trailer to the other to charge the battery and the generator should charge it's start battery when running.

  • Kelley,

I often find things like this. The nearest I can figure, if you buy Package A - they install Package A. If you buy Package B - they install Package B. If you buy Package A and Package B, both get installed, but nobody looks for how they might be interconnected to considerable advantage for the owner....

In this case, I thing a thing called a combiner would help him a lot. This is a device that when either battery is above resting voltage (aka being charged by something), it connects the two together so both get charged, but as soon as both are not being charged, they are separated.

  • Some MH's don't charge the chassis batteries from shore power. Who knows why the mfg decided this was a good idea. You could hook some jumper cables from the house batts to the genny starter batt.
