I am happy with my PowerMax, but you have to know what you want your converter to do exactly for its charging profile.
The PM4 models that came out a while back now, have a much improved charging profile over the earlier PMs and PM3s for going into boost. Not like a WFCO anymore. AFAIK the PM4s still do the absorption stage at 13.7v after doing bulk to 14.6v but you can ask Randy about that to confirm.
Your battery SOC when it changes from bulk to absorption will depend on the charging rate, ie the charging amps/battery bank size in AH, same as with any charger. Whether you call that "too early" depends on your charging rate and what you would prefer for your charging scenario.
