I believe 400AH AGM’s max charging rate is going to be >100 amps. Personally, if I was wanting to use the alternator as a means of charging them in a reasonable amount of time, I’d want to be able to do at least 40-50% of their max rate. Keep in mind that the DC charger input amps are going to be higher than the output amps. The Renogy 40 inputs are fused at 60 amps.
If the alternator you’ve got can’t handle that kind of load, I’d be looking for one that could. Why mess with a DC-DC charger if all your going to do is “trickle charge” them?
