Current readings seem off on the brakes

I checked the current readings on the trailer the other day and got some strange readings.

On one side (driver side) of the camper both wheels read 5.3 amps and both wheels on the other side read 2.3 amps. It looks like the feed is from the driver side rear wheel.

Now a month ago I changed out the 4 entire brake assemblies with new heavy duty self adjusting ones from Etrailer and the brakes seem to work fine so I don't think I have a problem with the magnets.

Any ideas on why they aren't equal? And does it make a difference?

  • Op back again, I went back under the trailer and rechecked the amps and sure enough I was checking the wrong leads, so all is well. Each magnet is drawing 2.85 amps as they should..

    Time for a cool one:S.

  • Same breaks and same magnets all should draw the same current when breaking. Check that they are connected correctly. All breaks in parallel and no bad connections. Get the manufacturers manual on their breaks and see what the correct current draw is.

A quote out of the manual for my breaking system (AlKo) is:

If the amperage reading at 12 volts is
greater than 3.2 amps, the magnet should
be replaced per instructions on page 19.
If the amperage reading is lower than
    2.8 amps, check battery charge.

3 amps is the normal current draw.
