Just last week I was sitting at the bar having a cold one with a friend who had just picked up a new phone on Straight Talk.
Interestingly he had no cell service nor data and I had full bars and 4G while sitting right beside him, I am on AT&T. So although they may use AT&T and Verizon's networks / towers, there is a difference somewhere.
With Straight Talk, you get AT&T OR Verizon, not both. So maybe your friend has one on the Verizon network, and maybe the Verizon network isn't so good in the bar.
Or maybe you both had a few too many, and the phone was turned off! Haha!
