data from Straight Talk

Hi,

It violates the terms of service :( I'm not into ripping anyone off.

They do have a dual tower hotspot that will work on either AT&T or Verizon.

Data is limited to 7 gigs. Not enough for me, sadly.

They have had Verizon and ATT for a long time, the others are new.

Just last week I was sitting at the bar having a cold one with a friend who had just picked up a new phone on Straight Talk.

Interestingly he had no cell service nor data and I had full bars and 4G while sitting right beside him, I am on AT&T. So although they may use AT&T and Verizon's networks / towers, there is a difference somewhere.

We just changed to T Mobile. No contract, unlimited talk, text, and data. Can use phone as a hot spot whenever. Total price for senior is $30 per month. For that price they do throttle down speed after a certain amount of data, but for $10 more per line they do not throttle back. DW has that feature on her line. So far we like it and that cut our cell phone bill in half.on edit, the costs include all taxes, fees etc. that’s 100 % of the bill

The best price I see for that Senior 55 plan is $35 per month, which is still a great price. Biggest problem is once you get out if major population centers, TMO's coverage is poor. And those are the places I want to camp.

Cellphone as a hotspot isn't my situation yet, but, most apps can be stopped from running. Just stopped. In the Settings -> Apps. Without disconnecting the WiFi.
  • Hi rockillmanor,

Unfortunately my cell phone is my hotspot and primary way for me to be on the wobbly wide web.

The KEY is to 'shut your data off" when you are not using it. The only time my data is on is when I am looking something up and then it gets shut off.

Also,The more apps you have on your phone the more data is being used by the apps. The apps use about 1/3 of your data, running in the background ALL the time whether you are using them or not.
  • I have Straight Talk and never go over the data.

When you downloaded the app You clicked ok without reading the privacy policy? You gave them the rights to use your data when ever they feel like it. some even state they can turn your phone on to use data. And they DO!

Why do you think so many are for free? :W They use your data and then the consumer usually upgrades their plan to get more data from the provider. Revolving $doors$ between providers and app owners.

Your battery will last longer also with no apps.

New phone no apps my battery will last over a week.
Phone with apps, and data left on, I'm lucky to get thru the day.

If you can find it (they don't have it on the website) their terms and conditions say you are not supposed to tether or use a phone as a hotspot. They have no way of knowing the difference, but if you are on the phone with them and tell them that you tethered, they will cut you off, until you pay for a new month. They are a Tracfone subsidiary and the same folks work both customer service sides, and it keeps training to a minimum. And believe me, training is at a minimum.
That said, I have been using a smartphone this way for several years. But if you buy one from Straight talk, there is a 50/50 chance that the hotspot feature has been disabeled. I know some LG models of theirs do work, and my unlocked Motorola phones work well.
