I had a similar situation with a NAPA battery. My local mechanic bought the battery from NAPA and kept it on his shelf (one of many he stocks). He installed it in my car. Napa tried to deny the warranty on two fronts. 1) date code showed it a LOT older than the time I had it in my vehicle and 2) I was not the original purchaser; the shop I took it to was the original purchaser. The shop had to fight for a long time to get the problem sorted out. I finally was reimbursed directly from NAPA corporate office for the new battery
