Interesting - I didn't know there was a date code other than on a sticker.
I returned a battery for the first time in my life last week. A Costco starting battery purchased in November with a November sticker on it. I ran it pretty well dead by leaving a light on in the sitting van for a week. I didn't know to charge it slowly - just put it on a large, somewhat smart charger that started at 15 amps. It started the van once and wouldn't do it again 20 minutes later.
No receipt. Costco didn't even ask for one - they had a record of the purchase. No questions about my misuse. Full refund as a cash card.
