Dead battery so quickly?

One of the trailers that I own is a 1975 model. I bought a brand new Code 24 battery. I was told it was fully charged. I hooked it up, and ran a fluorescent light for a few hours. The next day, the battery was stone dead.

What would cause this?

It does not have a fan running HVAC. It does not have any monitors. It only was used for 1 light for a few hours.

I am definitely bringing the battery back and getting them to help figure out of the battery is the problem.

And if it’s not the battery, why should them figure out anything?

You need more than guesswork to diagnose a problem. When I was testing batteries and rebuilding alternators customers went wild when I explained what failed.

Almost new 21 SI Delco alternator.

    Stopped charging

    Broken brush

    Why?

Delco used pure carbon brushes. Super long and they were brittle

Replaced with St Mary's USA carbon copper brushes. Lasted longer no breakage ever.

Cost $0.09 more per brush than Delco.

    Do something like that today?

Ok, so, what on a more than 40 year old trailer could kill a battery in one evening?

I am trying to isolate whether or not it is the battery. If it isn't the battery, then out comes the multimeter to find the problem.

  • me? i'd hook it to a charger and go from there. after charging let it rest for abt 15-min and then check the cells with a hydrometer.

    it's one of three things..

    - battery is defective. re-charging should answer that.
    - battery wasn't fully charged when you bought it. re-charging should answer that.
    - you had more of a draw than you thought.
  • What is the advertised amp hour capacity of the Code 24 battery?

“I was told it was fully charged.” That’s worth nothing.

    No
    Not yet
    dead.

I am learning not to trust someone when they say it is charged. I will have them do a load test prior to taking it.

What is the amp draw of that fluorescent light?

Honestly, I don't know, but when I had another battery that was the same, I could easily get a week or more without having to charge it.
