The primary difference is that the 1500 is temperature compensated and the 12117 is not. I prefer using the 1500 this time of year because charging at 40F with the 12117 doesn't bring the voltage up high enough to fully charge.
Another interesting tidbit is that while the 1500 has a slightly higher amperage rating, the box that plugs in the wall is half the size and half the weight of the 12117.
How much did you get the model 1500 for on Black Friday? .. if you don't mind sharing that info.
