"So, where are all these people who don't know why their Lifeline's last a long time?"
They are satisfied. Their 80,000 mile warranty on their BLSSRPX tires was almost satisfied, "Click!" their interest screen goes dark. Why should they ponder something that went "right"?
It's when a customer fumes at laying out hundreds of dollars once again is when trouble erupts at rainbow falls that guesswork and wrong answers appear stage left. People who accidentally fell into a bed of roses have no idea of how they avoided offending their batteries. The clueless attempting to assuage the persecuted.
When I climbed aboard a million dollar ketch into the cockpit the first words out of my mouth were...
"I am successful because my customers comply with my custom of first asking thirty questions. If you will helpfully play along, you will be rewarded with being chalked up in the "success" column"
Some motor homers reacted negatively to my opening statement. They saw no value in the way I did business so I sent them on their way. Those kind of folks were land mines and I avoid land mines. They were preparing themselves by assuming an offensive defense. Got it?
It is impossible to arrive at a rational analysis without gaining information. Dead freaking impossible, if not by the luck of the draw. I have been unwilling to play stumble bum for fifty years. Those who go after the $$$ are not good technicians. There are far too many things going on when equipment is out of sight. Battery lifespan defects must be analyzed by asking questions of the user.
I love picking on US Borax -- a major company. When the head of vehicle maintenance told me his Terex Titans discharged 8-D batteries waiting in line for a load with a 90 amp discharge (massive lighting) for over an hour at idle, then spent 35 minutes travel time underway only to return for another wait in line...
Had "Nothing to do" with 6 month battery life, I held my temper. I told him WHICH model of Leece-Neville alternator would charge 105 amperes at the speed ratio of crankshaft to alternator pulley ratios.
"Get rid of the six inch alternator pulleys, and replace with 3"
"What you're trying to make excuses for, is your batteries are no good junk" he spat venom.
"No, what I am showing is if I was your boss, your ass would be hitting the street inside ten minutes" I told the battery vendor I represented "You just saved your rear from a loss of thousands of dollars"
Ignorance is not only limited to RV'ers. A competitor took on the Borax account and through gossip I learned they were fired after a while. Borax was consuming 2 pallets of 8-D's per month. An engineer at Trojan told me there was a bitter fight between the other vendor and Trojan their supplier.
I hope Borax learned a bitter lesson. Their idiot maintenance chief cost them untold tens of thousands of dollars. As you can deduce my job was to avoid land mines. A novice cannot even begin to imagine how much money is lost in even a single warranty.
Since so many garages are only interested in $$$ with battery issues their blind guesswork leads to many frustrated customers and if the losses add up to intolerable levels it is up to the customer to learn fundamental in's and out's of correct battery maintenance and diagnosis, since garages are unwilling to learn.
Batteries are like RV travel in Mexico, people realize few technicians are competent so they feel free to enter the arena spewing bullcrap by the wagon load. This forum is undoubtedly the best, meaning, mired less deep in B.S. than any other RV tech forum. Some cruising and alternative energy forums are decent as well.
I'd like to take this opportunity to beg folks to keep answers polite. IF YOU CHALLENGE A PERSON"S POINT, do it with facts, not a personal attack. Personal attacks only confirm the attacker has lost the difference of opinion.
