The principle works exactly the same as when sizing capacitors for tuning frequency.
For instance Niehoff had to learn the hard way about curing an audio buzz in their alternators. A pair of .01uf caps across phase 1-2 then 2-3 stops the buzz.
Batteries can be rated in the 1.+ farad range. Frequency wise and amplitude are not high enough to affect solid state components. But when frequency rises just so far, the signal comes oblivious to the presence of the battery. And it's those high frequency blips that degrade components gradually then fail a sensitive circuit altogether.
An avalanche rectifier tames lower voltage circuits to 28-32 volts. They have a 30-amp rating which really snubs low amplitude high energy spikes.
I like 18 volt 1500 watt Transient Voltage suppressors and 18 volt MOVs for mid and high range snubbing. The low working limits mean the devices will have a limited lifespan.But protection is enhanced.
Clamp a Motorola MR-2535 and 4 18 volt rated MOVS across that starter and the field collapse jolt diminishes to insignificance.
Snub 6 or 7 circuits in a non bluetooth auto and nullify EMP threats. Except for stuff that has an antenna
