When decaying the pulse needs only a few thousandths of a second to pass enough energy to knock a person on their butt. If you look at the disc on a solenoid you will see erosion. 99% of that electrolytic loss on one side happens during the break cycle. Yes they could correct it with mercury. But that one needs no explaining does it?
Then a sine wave has a negative form as well as a positive one. Peak inverse voltage. Suddenly the deep end of the pool is twice as deep. Think about why a snubber diode is wired from the negative to the positive (in reverse). When snubbing something like a winch motor a serious 3 amp 1000 PIV unit should be considered.
And do not forget to add the effects of the starter solenoid itself. A large field collapse can definitely be felt. It is a magnetic servo as well as electric contact controller.
Companies prefer to avoid discussing voltage spike problems. Even though spikes take their toll on component lifespan, name a electronics company that insists on say a 5 or 10 year lifespan. That would never do. Faruno had a hell of a time with their color side scan sonars forty years ago.
A fully loaded load dump fails electronics fails things instantly. Niggling ankle biting small transients keep testing components and fail prematurely and I hope no one got off the track to the point of forgetting what this sub thread is all about.
