did you add a fan to your refrigerator?

We have a three year old Dometic side by side and am hoping to improve cooling and get hard ice cream. A fellow I met while traveling said he added a computer fan to improve air flow over the back of the refrigerator. I would like just a few specifics if this worked for you. I sure would like to have hard ice cream. Thanks for any tips in advance....David ps I have had little luck changing the setting to a higher number and noticing a difference.

  • I added one on the inside to even out the temp from top to bottom. My frig will freeze everything if I keep it closed for to long and the temp set above 2 or 3. I do not doubt that a fan in the vent would help in the summer but my problem is avoiding freezing not getting it to freeze. I use a separate Dorm Room Ref for our vegetables, eggs, etc.

It sounds like your thermostat may not be working properly. Does turning the temp control change the temp or does it stay the same regardless? Does it behave the same on Gas or Electric? 6 years ago the thermostat went out on the electric side of our Dometic while the gas side still worked fine.

So we would arrive with good cold ref on gas, switch to electric and then try to figure out why all our food was getting to warm. Eventually we figured it out, but we were blaming ourselves for leaving the ref open, blaming the heat on that side of the RV, decided we had to much food in the ref and the air was not circulating, etc. etc. Fixed the thermostat and yahoo all is well now.
  • It should work better than that.
Manufacturers don't always do a much of a job installing refers. I removed mine one long winter after finding a site that detailed how they should be installed. I found that the roof opening was about 50% blocked with membrane material.
I used the site guidelines to fine tune the way the air moves through the compartment and made sure it was insulated around the sides and top as much as I could.
It runs perfectly even in triple digit temps - even without fans.

Just curious, what are your fridge and freezer temps?

I added fans for the summers here in Phoenix when it's 115 degrees and my fridge stays at 33 and freezer about 3 degrees.

if your question was directed at me our fridge frequently bumps up against 40 and sometimes goes above. freezer gets into the teens but usually only when fridge approaches 40. as I mentioned we are done worrying, stressing and fussing with it. we rarely boondock so we're going residential.

  • yes, we did. tried one on the inside. didn't make a difference. added exhaust fan to the chimney stack...made a slight difference. we're tired of messing with it and stressing about it. we're currently shopping for a new MH (ours is 15-years old and starting to nickel and dime us). the new one will have a residential fridge.
