Digital Dometic thermostat trick in Texas heat...

Just for those who use the digital single-zone Dometic thermostat, and find that it will not turn on the compressor (gives an overtemp error) (especially here in TX with the 110 degree days), here is what I do:

1: Turn the fan on high. The thermostat will allow the fan to go on, not the compressor.
2: Open windows and vent fan in bathroom.
3: Spray it from a couple feet away with canned air. Most brands have a foul-smelling chemical added to keep people from huffing it, thus the ventilation. Close enough to cool it. Make sure to not spray too long, and wear something as insulation to prevent frostbite.
4: Hold down both the "+" button, press the on/off button, keep both held down for three seconds, until the display shows "--". Push the on/off button again, and the thermostat -should- be able to kick off the compressor.

  • The REAL FIX is to install a new tstat. Dometic realized the problem over 2 years ago and remade the tstats. Dometic will warranty the old style. There should be a YELLOW sticker dot on the correct new style tstat. They look the same and have the same Part Number, but the fixed tstats have the yellow dot. Doug
  • Just three wires.... could always travel with the thermostat in the fridge :R
Kinda lame actually to error out like that. But thanks for the tip as I converted to the Dometic digital recently.
  • Neither. This is for the air conditioning and heater units in some recent (2010 and newer) travel trailers. This thermostat controls both, as well as a heat pump or a heat strip if one is present (although one has to specify those when ordering the thermostat.)
  • Is this a absorption fridge or a compressor fridge? Propane fridges don't have a compressor.
