There is a "door" if you will, in the part of the chimney that houses the heating element. Your first photo shows part of this door. Look towards the top of the door and you will see a metal tab (it shows in the photo). Straighten out the tab with a pair of pliers. The metal door is help in place by this tab. Once it's straightened out, just lift the door up and it will easily slide out. The element is wrapped with fiberglass insulation.
