I have a feeling it's what has been going on in these threads that Dometic was trying to reduce by not making this recall public until all the T's were crossed and the I's dotted. They wanted to eliminate the possibility of a riot and as this thread progresses, the anxiety level has risen. What is it going to be like in April?
The figures stated above are not quite correct. .01% of 926877 units is 93, not 9269. That's 93 out of almost a million. From the Dometic disclosure:
"Dometic estimates a potential maximum incident rate of 0.01% related to boiler fatigue cracks that leak and may result in a fire. There have been no incidents of injury or death related to the affected population of Dometic refrigerators."
As far as I've been able to research, there have been two or three documented fires originating in the fridge area in the last few years, although, whether these were actually related to the recall is still unknown.
Let's not jump the gun on this. Even though Dometic could have handled this better, I still have faith that things will sort themselves out. Dometic has far too much to lose by not taking care of business.
The problem I have with this is the unknown factor. I take Dometic's figures the same as a politicians speech.
Up until the last couple of months many thousands of repair facilities knew nothing of the problem and I wager there may be still thousands.
In this thread how many people have stated they have replaced how many cooling unites or refrigerators? I think around 15 replacements. This seems like a high number when you look at the percentage of reports that have been made compared to the number of people that had knowledge of the defect from 1997.
In other words how many unreported failures have there been.
As far as injury's or deaths, we have no way of knowing that as no one seemed to be aware of the defect until 2005. so fire cause could have been attributed to something else.
I think that 0.01% may at best be a guesstimate in Dometics favor'
