You where right on the short... I did not see the light until Tim pointed it out. I corrected my post way above ( now about 4 of them) and straightened it out.

On the GFI's, yes the technology is advancing. Also see Arc fault protection breakers now on the market and required in 2003 by NEC in bedrooms of homes. They have now figured out how to practically help protect you from a short to ground and a short between hot and neutral that does not trip the normal circuit breaker fast enough.
