Drill a vent/purge hole in my propane line?

Hi,
Having troubles with my propane lines. I have read about stuff getting in the supply lines over time such as oil or water. The stuff they add to make it smelly is some type of oil.

Anyway, as i totally dont want to disassemble lots of stuff, i was thinking.... what if i got underneath and drilled a small hole at the lowest point in the pipeline? Let the **** drain out, then tap it, put some gasket maker on the screw and tighten her up?

Opinions?

  • Just in case, when I changed out my broken propane regulator for a new one I had to unscrew the line from regulator to the plumbing underneath. So when line was disconnected, I just let it drip till it was empty and when line stopped dripping I reconnected it. Total oil that drained out of line was maybe a 1/8 of a spray paint plastic lid. RV I did this on was 4 years old at the time but never any problems. We had one rv 18 years and it got heavy use, never had any propane problems.

If you drill a hole to vent /purge...where are the drill filings going to go? True 90 percent will fall down. Where's the other 10 percent going to go? Only takes a tiny sliver to plug up tiny orifice burner. Then you got to take apart more stuff. I had a suburban water heater in a boat years ago and it took size .89mm Won't take much to plug something that small.
  • I would not drill any hole in LP lines, doubtful it could be properly tapped and sealed, and would then leak lp gas....dangerous

    i would replace the regulator

still having problems i would get a pro to service it
  • Dons, i see what you are saying. The oil would separate and end up in the tank, not in the lines. But i just saw a video of a guy disconnecting his propane hose and oil came out. He was surprised.
  • What you talk about getting in your lies really can't happen because all the junk settles to the bottom of the tank. Your appliances use vapor and not the liguid which is at the bottom of the tank
  • Unless it's a very large line I don't think I would want to drill and tap a hole in a pipe and count on it to seal up. It certainly could work, but it just sounds sketchy.
