Being in the new england area of the US, most of the areas we camp at are covered in shade of some sort which obviously impacts the effectiveness of solar. With the panels being used in a "portable" manner we can put them where they are most effective but I'm sure there will be some shade lines and what not that block the sun from time to time.
In an environment like that would it be better going PWM or MPPT? Poly or Mono? Taking into account that 24v panels seem cheaper then 12v panels per watt would MPPT be better in the long run?

shade is bad news. on a PWM controller, Any shade disables charging on a single panel.
With MPPT It will depend on the panel. if its has enough bypass diodes it can lose voltage and still charge a bit. so maybe :h
