if I don't get the companion how will I get 30 amps out of one of the 20amp plugs on the regular model? If I just buy (or make) the cables to connect the 2, that still doesn't give me a plug capable of producing 30amps
You won't get 30a from two generators. Each 2000 (if you go back to that one) is capable of max 13.2 each, giving a total in parallel of about 26. The 2200's are capable of a bit more, but they will be screaming loud at full power.
This is my setup. Yes, I connect 3 and CAN get over 30a. Afaik you can't buy that in a parallel kit. You can put any socket you want in there. Parallel kits are nothing more than wires.

And I've heard all the arguments before about 'suicide' plugs and how some kid is going to wander by and kick them out. First, you plug in the the regular sockets BEFORE starting them up (as your manual says), and, those regular plugs are very difficult to 'kick out'. Besides, you should be attentive enough to not let anyone mess around with running generators.
That said, feel free to buy that parallel kit if you feel better about it. What I made above costs about $35.
