What is happening is the Middle East oil cartel is being replaced with an even worse Corn cartel. With shale oil the US is now the world's leading oil producer, and there is not even any need for ethanol anymore. The ethanol program is sited as a prime example of a program that has out lived it usefulness, but continues just because it's there. Meanwhile, other corn products are through the roof with cost. Next they will be pushing for 20%, and that may raise the cost of cars. There's no end to it, not to mention all the power equipment that can't handle the stronger mixture. When one of the politicians was asked why we still need ethanol, the only reason put forward was "well, they've invested in all that equipment"
