The different ideas in wire size has to do with length needed. Just like an extension chord, the longer you go, the heavier chord needed.
Ten awg wire is fine for 30 amp, up to 50'. For 100' 8 awg is recommended. Will 10 work at 100'? Yes, but 8 will work better.
As far as 6 awg, yes for 50 amp. You may have trouble with lug fitment on some home entrance boxes, with 6.
