MEXICOWANDERER
May 05, 2015Explorer
Even with the nuclear reactor at Bahia Verde, Mexican electricity rates are puni- tive.
The reason, is typical Mexican aptitude...design by improvisation...
No large electrical grid. Get this...
Nine hundred individual generating plants. Southern Mexico is the worst offender. The state of Oaxaca has sixty-six individual generating plants, most of them are diesel. Retired Detroit Diesel locomotive engines powering whatever type of generator seems handiest.
Comision Federal de Electricidad is trying to modernize the system but the task is simply overwhelming. Somewhere I read Mexico City has in excess of three thousand miles of extension cords in slum areas connecting shack to shack. Many have but a pair of light bulbs. No refrigerator. Buy groceries and use them the same day.
The regional CFE steam turbine plant was hospital clean inside. Everything gleamed and the fumes of fresh paint were evident. Microwave computer connections to all regional yard substations, some 200 miles distant.
Six days late on your bill and you'd better grab a flashlight.
But LCD demand meters are here, and God forbid the implications of -that-.
