The converter is part of the mix somewhere. Yes, the converter is frequently behind the circuit breaker / fuse panel. Perhaps start with the circuit breaker for the converter, is it tripped?
Refrigerator and light problems could be a result of no 12V power, i.e. bad converter, low batteries.
Comment about some lights not working is puzzleing. If it is a battery problem all 12V lights will have the same problem.
If you have a voltmeter there is a simple way to check the converter. With house current disconnected measure battery voltage across terminals. Probably around 12.0 to 12.6 volts. Plug in the shore power. Voltage across batteries should be higher, maybe in the neighborhood of 13.8 volts. No increase, your converter isn't working.
Simple voltage meters are around $10 at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
