Electrician says Motor Homes want 220v

Tell your neighbor that he is an idiot! All RV's (OK, a few exceptions) use 120V. A 30 amp RV MUST be wired for 120V. A 50 amp coach MUST be wired for 120V. However, the 50 amp RV has 2 legs of 120V service and between the 2 legs there is a reading of 240V if you connect a meter but nothing in the coach is wired for 240V. Hooking up your 30 amp RV to 240V = BOOM!

110 and 220 to me is similar to calling a battery a "jar"
Although I think 110 220 just rolls off the tongue better for most people. Kinda like our first words as an infant.

Amazing how a simple question can generate 3 pages.....or more....of replies.

The simple answer is: If your RV really IS wired for 30 amp service, that is 110/120 service and your friend put in the right outlet.

Whoever advised your neighbor is wrong.....at least for your RV.

Now to go back and see what is IN those 3 pages of "discussion".

What voltage for a motor home?
Everything (With one possible exception) in a Standard order Motor home is 120 volt

30 amp service is 120 volt
Many have hired an electrician. he looked at the outlet, did not read the MAXIMUM 125 VOLTS printed on it and fried the RV's electronics.

50 Amp service is identical to house servce save for the size

120/240 volt.. (240 divided) each let to Neutral is 120 volts and that is what the appliancs and such use

The excption is an Intelletec Energery Manager if it sees 240 volts it goes to sleep since you are on 50 amps.

3-Wires 120 volt hot, neutral and the odd shaped one is safety ground
4 Wires Hot, Neutral, Hot and the odd shaped one is safety ground.

One reason the NEC (National Electrical Code) was established was to create standards that EVERYONE, yes even those who are not electrically inclined, can reasonably assume. That means that when they see a certain type of receptacle, it only accepts a certain plug, assuring them that it will be the proper voltage, amperage, phase, polarity, frequency, blah, blah, blah for their intended application. When ANYONE intentionally or unintentionally deviates from the standards for whatever reason, they are creating a time bomb for the next sorry sucker who didn't know about the "NEW STANDARD" and they end up damaging their electrical system.

Most children at some point in their young life receive a substantial jolt which reminds them not to touch certain things that they don't understand. Most learn from that experience. Some don't. Who do you want to be? IMO using a new or modified electrical system that you haven't previously tested tells me that possibly you have been jolted one to many times and failed to learn.
