My apologies for not posting. After I got things working we got on the road and were out of cell coverage area all weekend. Thanks to all for chiming in. Here is what I think happened. As per what others said I had two issues, the 120 issue i'm guessing is what Mr Wizard mentioned and I definitely learned something here. Disconnect shore power prior to starting generator. I think this fixed itself after waiting a bit for the transfer switch to reset.
The 12 volt issue was due to a battery kill switch which the previous owner installed and I guess might be faulty. The fact that the lights came back on and then dimmed and then went out made me think of the switch. The switch is a dash mounted type, up is off, down is on. Once I switched off and then back on the dash alarm went out and the lights came right back on.
