The re-man GM engine worked slightly better (power and oil consumption) than the crate engines I purchased. The Ford's were straight remanufactured. They used NO oil, restored original power and went as much as 90,000 miles before I sold the vehicles.
Factory remanufactured automatic and manual transmissions are also a whole level higher than any reman...
"We found too many valve bodies with porous castings, so all our THM400's have new series valve bodies. The clutch drums are now heat treated, and the servo bores have a stainless steel liner"
No independent rebuilder can do that. Factory reman parts are the standard to beat, but I whipped their butt off the map with my remans. Better regulators and much tougher diodes (rectifiers). But independent reman rotors and stators are death incarnate to an alternator. When remanufacturers BURN wire out of stator laminations the silicon in the steel fuses.
I cannot afford screwups now for a different reason that I could not afford screwups when I was in business. I had a hundred twenty dollar REMANUFACTURED front axle go bad on me, followed by two more failures. Made in Tijuana. I then bought a PAIR of brand-new constant velocity drive axles delivered to my USA PO box, for EIGHTY NINE DOLLARS total. The only game in town had set me back 400 plus dollars and left me walking for a month.
Disappointing engines are a tough lump to swallow. Same for transmissions. Sometimes paying a 50% premium saves 500% in long-term expenses. Engine oil costs SIX DOLLARS A QUART down here, and I haven't got money to burn.
