Entry door opened while travelling - update

We pulled into a rest stop today and someone following our TT on the highway came over to us and said our rear entry door opened while driving along the road. We checked it and it was definitely closed and locked. But when we pushed on the door after re-locking it, it made a light clicking sound as if the latch had not completely engaged. We always give it a tug to make sure it's latched.

Should we also always be locking the doors (we have two entry doors) with the dead bolt as well anytime we are on the road? Have not heard of this happening before.

Fortunately there was no apparent damage and nothing missing. This particular door has been into the dealer twice already with latch problems. Maybe it's still faulty...

  • I've had the rear bedroom door come open on our old fiver, noticed it while rounding a curve. From then on I always locked both locks and never had an issue again.
  • I always deadbolt my door when traveling. In fact, there's a warning stick on the door that says to deadbolt it while in motion

Motorhomes have FMVSS certified door latches because they can be occupied while moving. Supposed to not pop open... Trailers have lesser latches because they aren't supposed to be occupied, so maybe they aren't as resistant to popping open.

Was just talking to my brother about RV doors and we noticed they're always hinged on the side toward the front of the unit. At least keeps a door from being ripped off by the wind if it opens.
  • The flexing of TT movement may make the door open while traveling if not dead bolted. I dead bolt my door always and never had an issue
