This brings up an issue of the market price of corn. Corn prices are MARKET prices and not merely the dollars per ton that corn costs. Sugar is sugar is alcohol. Sugar beets are easier to grow, easier to process, and render six times as much sugar as corn. Why corn?
When I crossed from Tijuana (100% USA gasoline without ethanol) to the area between the border and San Diego my eyes began to sting, and my nose became congested. To say Tijuana without pollution standards (5,000,000 residents) has CLEANER AIR than San Diego is preposterous. I had to end up taking "Loratadine" antihistamine, and no, nothing was "in bloom" in late December.
This piqued my curiosity and lead me on a fruitless snipe hunt.
The new reformulation of "recoverable light sweet crude" estimates that now show the USA will become a major exporter until 2120 or so, and that Australia has 150-times the amount of fracturable shale of the USA really raises my eyebrows.
So do the so-called "surveys" refiners use to shout "US Citizens Demand No New Refineries In Our Back Yard" originate?
Refiners (oil companies) do not reveal WHERE these surveys were conducted.
Marin County California? Rolling Hills Estates? Lower Manhattan?
Interesting.
What set-me-off was seven dollars for a bag of sweet corn (USA) down here. Roughly 5 times in dollars what the same bag cost three years ago.
