Ether and carb cleaner actually evaporate very fast, so in reality internal engine parts should not inhale enough to cause damage unless you squirt it directly into cylinder (not recommended)..
Correctly setup gas engine really should never need a squirt of help out of a can, but in a pinch for some of these newer modern extremely lean carbs in very cold weather it beats having to tug 50 times at the pull rope.
