Wayne - I doubt that trailer cords can build up enough heat in their typical stored condition, but: Amperage ratings are generally based on heat buildup. Resistance of a circuit results in the creation of heat and the dissipation of the heat is usually the limiting factor. If wires are bundled their ampacity is reduced because the adjacent wires limit heat rejection. If you have a small gauge extension cord, coiled tightly, the heat can't be dissipated adequately and the insulation on the wires can actually melt. I have actually had this happen.
