Extra 50 amp extension?

How many of you carry an extra 50 amp extension cord and, if so, how often have you needed it? We have a 30' 50 amp extension that I want to leave in storage (won't be back through for six months) but the wife thinks we need to have along. The thing weighs 25# (feels like twice that) and I'm all about keeping the weight down since we're close to the rear axle rating on the truck.

Thanks!

Rob
  • 7 years and never needed one. UNTIL. In August we were at the KOA in Eureka Springs and the power pedestal was near the front of the particular site we were in and my trailer connection is on the rear. Cord would not reach without pulling very near the front of the site. KOA employee saw my problem and said I could borrow his 50 amp extension. Great personal service. Outside temp was hot and I needed the 50 to run both A/Cs. I plan to buy a 50 amp extension even though I may not need it any time soon.
  • If you don't/can't/won't carry it you should sell it on Craigslist. THe 50 amp extension will do you no good in storage. The only way you will ever be able to use it is to have it with you
I have a 50 amp cord that I just used last week at a FHU CG in Lancaster.
Nothing special or really weird about the site but my 50 amp cord would not reach without the extension.
I carry the ext cord at all times and truth is I seldom use it. However just like insurance is there when I need it.
If you are so close to your ratings that you can't carry an extension cord you are essentially overloaded already. You really need to consider an upgraded tow vehicle. I imagine you already know that.
In the meantime there is no point to pulling into a site and wish your expensive 50 amp cord were with you and not at home!

Your wife wants it. End of conversation.
Do you realize what your life would be like if you needed it and didn't have it?
Make room for the extension cord. :)

Even though we have 50A service in our FW, we only carry a 30A extension cord and appropriate adapters. Rarely do we have to use it, but it's nice to have. If we need to use it, we run only one AC so we don't overload the system. The 30A cord is MUCH easier to handle and store.

+1 Have used it on overnight stays when gravel pull throughs are chewed up and I rather pull up or backup to level and still have basic electric without handling a heavy cord.
  • If wherever takes you to Thumbsuck Idaho it might be a different reality than Orlando. Crowded parks, improvisation, spontaneity all impact the chances of running into an odd power post orientation. What's worse? Need or weight?
