It is very common that the wiring runs down one side of the trailer and then passes through the axle to get to the other side. The inside of the axle is generally not polished or painted. Over time the wires will wear and create bare spots. As the trailer moves the wires bounce around. When the bare spot hits the you will get a "trailer disconnect" warning.
