Finally got our rig running correctly
Last month I posted about my rig's poor mileage and lack of power(http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27668067/gotomsg/27670155.cfm#27670155, I found a bad vacuum line, replaced the line but the engine was still running poorly.
When we got to Denver on the way home, I thought something was odd about the fuel tank. When I fueled, there was a lot more pressure that before the trip, changed the filters, normal amount of pressure in fuel tank after that. Engine ran even better from Denver to home, but still not right.
About a year ago when I had to reregister the rig, the shop running the state mandated emissions test fiddled with both the timing and the carb to get the engine to pass the test, so I decided to have a local shop set the timing and adjust the carb to match smog standards.
The Guy in the shop said the secondary's weren't responding and suggested another shop for that work. I went to the carb shop and the owner said he felt that the secondary's were responding but that they really only open while the engine were on the road and under a load. He suggested I take the cover off and try driving on the freeway and flooring the accelerator. The secondary's did open so I set up an appointment to have it looked at. Today I finally got the rig into his shop and he found that either the secondary's were bent or installed incorrectly and replaced them and adjusted the carb while on the test computer. He also adjusted the timing, it was at 13 degrees BTDC and it was supposed to be at 4 degrees BTDC.
I also changed the air filter this morning before he did any work.
When I picked it up and drove it home what a difference in the sound and feel of the MoHo. Smooth and quiet, now to take off up to the Sierra and see how the power and mileage are.
I don't like working on vehicles that are smog equipped but boy did it pay off this time. I couldn't fix everything but I finally found a shop that could tell from running the emissions test where the problem areas were and check that part out.
Got to get out of town and burn a couple of tanks of gas. Oh, maybe I already said that. DGKs get out of school for the summer, DW has a couple of trips planned with them.
